BPU Extends Disconnects Through May 31st

(KANSAS CITY, Kan.) — The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has extended disconnecting utility service for non-payment as customers and communities are facing potential hardship from coronavirus through May 31. This temporary moratorium includes residential and business customers.

Initially, BPU voluntarily suspended utility disconnects on March 16 prior to KS Governor Laura Kelly’s executive order suspending all utility disconnects until May 1. In order to reduce the risk of exposure for the safety of BPU customers and employees, the BPU lobby will remained closed until further notice.

Customers are encouraged to stay current with their bills to avoid getting too far behind and if anyone has any BPU billing or customer service questions, they can call 913-573-9190 and a utility representative is available to assist.

Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend limiting person-to-person contact amid coronavirus in our communities. BPU’s primary objective in this situation is to protect and keep customers and the community safe.

If you typically pay in person, there are a number of quick, easy, and convenient ways for customers to pay their monthly utility bill remotely. These include:

  • On-line at www.BPU.com – available 24 hours a day, seven days a week using a credit card or savings/checking account. Available in English and Spanish, payments are posted immediately.

  • By Phone – dial 1-855-278-2455 (1-855-BPU-BILL), using a credit/debit card or savings/checking account.

  • Auto-withdrawal – automatic bank draft allows your payment to be automatically withdrawn from your savings or checking account on a monthly basis. To enroll please go online at bpu.com or call 913-573-9190.

  • U.S. Mail – mail your payment to BPU at P.O. Box 219661, Kansas City, MO 64121-9661 in the return envelope provided with your monthly bill.

  • Self-Service Payment Kiosks and Payment Drop Box – available 24/7, inside the BPU entrance doors located at 540 Minnesota Avenue, KCK.

  • Grocery store Pay Site kiosks in the greater Kansas City area. Click here for a list of participating locations or call 1-877-876-7076.
    • BPU has temporarily waived fees to use PaySite kiosks to make payments. PaySite kiosks accept cash and checks

Residential customers who are financially impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak, please contact us at 913-573-9145 for payment arrangements or additional payment options that are available.

Even though we have discontinued utility disconnects, customers will continue to receive reminders, including collection notices and calls as these notifications are important to remind customers of past-due balances and status of their accounts.

BPU is closely following the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) guidelines and recommendations on the steps it can take to help prevent the spread of the virus. BPU will continue to closely monitor this situation and do all it can to protect its customers, employees, and the general public.
