KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Fitch Ratings has upgraded the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities' (BPU) utility system revenue bond rating from A to A+ and assigned the utility a Stable Outlook. Fitch also established BPU's Standalone Credit Profile at A+.
According to Fitch, the upgrade reflects continued improvement in BPU's financial profile, strong revenue stability, and very low operating costs. The rating agency also cited BPU's financial flexibility and ability to manage future growth opportunities while maintaining strong financial performance.
Credit ratings are independent assessments of an organization's financial strength and ability to meet its financial obligations. Higher ratings can improve access to capital markets and lower borrowing costs, helping utilities invest in critical infrastructure while maintaining affordability for customers.
"This upgrade reflects years of responsible stewardship of ratepayer dollars and a commitment to maintaining BPU's long-term financial strength," said Andrew Ferris, Chief Financial Officer. "We've worked hard to strengthen our financial position and build the flexibility needed to invest in our electric and water systems while continuing to deliver value to our customers."
In its report, Fitch highlighted BPU's reduced debt burden, strong operating cash flow, adequate liquidity, independent rate-setting authority, and manageable capital improvement plans. The agency also noted BPU's ability to accommodate future growth while maintaining financial stability.
The upgrade comes as BPU continues investing in critical infrastructure across its electric and water systems, including reliability improvements, substation upgrades, water transmission enhancements, and renewable energy projects designed to support the future needs of Wyandotte County.
"Strong financial stewardship is essential to fulfilling our mission of delivering safe, reliable, and efficient utility services that support our community," said Jeremy Ash, General Manager. "This recognition demonstrates that BPU is making responsible decisions today that position our utility for long-term success while maintaining our focus on reliability, affordability, and service."
Fitch noted that BPU's financial profile has strengthened significantly in recent years, supported by sustained cash flow, lower leverage, and sound operational performance. The agency's Stable Outlook reflects its expectation that BPU will maintain its financial strength.
