BPU’s Moss Receives 2023 Black Achievers Award

(KANSAS CITY, Kan.) — Maurice Moss, Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) Executive Director of Corporate Compliance was recently named a recipient of the 2023 Black Achievers in Business and Industrial Awards, sponsored by the Southern Leadership Christian Conference of Greater Kansas City and the Black Achievers Society. This award is presented to African American business professionals in the Kansas City area who exhibit leadership accomplishment, better their community through civic and philanthropic involvement, and motivate others around them to excel.

Maurice is a practicing attorney and a stand-out leader in public power and the non-profit arenas, representing and leading the utility industry on multiple fronts and being an advocate for youth and diversity.

At BPU Maurice is responsible for providing leadership over the functional areas of Environmental Services, NERC Compliance and Risk Management, and monitoring and interpreting regulatory requirements, while working to protect the utility’s assets and integrity. He is Immediate Past-Chairman of the American Public Power Association’s (APPA) Legal and Regulatory Committee, a current Board Member of the Southwestern Power Resources Association, Donnelly College and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City.

Moss previously served as a mentor and volunteer with the Kansas City Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS), among other things. He was a Diversity and Inclusion Award Honoree in Missouri Lawyer’s Weekly, a past recipient of the Big Couple of the Year Award with the BBBS, and much more.

Maurice received his undergraduate degree from Oral Roberts University, his law degree from Western Michigan University where he was on the Dean’s List and a Presidential Fellow Finalist, and he has an Executive Certificate in MBA Essentials from the University of Illinois – Gies College of Business.

As a public employee, Maurice believes it’s his mission to serve both customers and the community and is appreciative that his position at BPU affords him that opportunity. Moss is the father of two with his wife Christa.

BPU’s water department was originally created in 1909, and its electric utility was operational in 1912. The purpose of the utility, then and to this day, is to provide the highest quality electric and water services at the lowest possible cost. Today the publicly owned utility serves approximately 65,000 electric and 53,000 water customers, primarily in Wyandotte County, Kansas.
