55th Street Bridge reopening delayed to Oct. 9
Released on September 23, 2026
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) is advising residents, businesses, and motorists that the reopening of the 55th Street Bridge in the Turner neighborhood has been delayed from Sept. 30 to Friday, Oct. 9, extending the current closure by nine days.
The project began after crews discovered a leak in a 24-inch water main near the south side of the bridge, requiring traffic restrictions while they made repairs. The water main has since been repaired and returned to service, but testing and assessment identified additional areas needing repair before roadway restoration could move forward.
Those repairs are now complete, and crews are focused on finishing the remaining restoration work needed to safely reopen the bridge.
BPU recognizes the continued disruption this closure has caused for Turner residents, businesses, and motorists who rely on this route. We appreciate the community’s patience as repairs are completed and are working with our contractors to reopen the bridge as soon as safely possible.
Motorists should continue to use alternate routes until the bridge reopens. Road signage will be updated to reflect the Oct. 9 reopening date, and BPU will provide additional updates if the schedule changes.
