How to Report a Problem
The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) maintains more than 20,000 streetlights and 5,500 traffic signals throughout Wyandotte County. If you notice a streetlight or traffic signal that isn’t working properly, let us know by submitting the form below. Providing us with the pole tag number is the quickest way for us to identify and repair the correct light.
What to Know Before You Submit

Find the Pole Tag
A KCBPU pole tag number is the quickest way for us to identify the correct street light. Not every streetlight or traffic signal is maintained by BPU, so providing the tag number helps us determine whether the light is BPU-maintained and ensures your report is routed correctly.

Look for the KCBPU identification tag attached to the pole.

What to Expect
After you submit your report: We review the information you provided; our Dispatch and Scheduling team records the report; a work order is created; the work is assigned for repair; and if we need more information, we’ll contact you using your preferred method.
Street Light Repairs
BPU has one dedicated lineworker assigned to street light maintenance. Street light repairs are typically completed in the order they are received and can take 30–45 days, depending on the light’s location, weather, material availability, and the type of repair needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Reporting a Problem
Do I need the pole tag number?
No. The pole tag helps us find the correct light faster, but you can still submit a report without it. Please provide as much location information as possible.
Can I report more than one streetlight?
Yes, but please submit a separate report for each light so we can create the correct work order for each location.
Repairs
How long does a streetlight repair take?
Streetlight repairs can take 30 to 45 days depending on the location, weather, available materials, and type of repair needed.
I already reported a streetlight. Should I report it again?
If it has been less than 45 days, there is no need to submit another report. If it has been more than 45 days and the light is still out, call (913) 573-9522 and leave a message with the location and your callback information.
Are traffic signal problems handled differently?
Yes. Traffic signal problems are prioritized and reviewed as quickly as possible.
Ownership
Does BPU maintain every streetlight in Wyandotte County?
No. Some lights are maintained by other organizations. A KCBPU pole tag helps us determine if the light is maintained by BPU.
Does BPU manage traffic signal timing?
No. BPU maintains traffic signal equipment, but does not manage signal timing.
