Built by Our Community. Driven by Our Purpose.

More than 100 years ago, the people of Wyandotte County made a decision that still shapes our community today.

In 1909, residents voted to purchase a privately owned water system because they believed reliable, affordable utility service should put the community first. Electric service followed in 1912, creating what is now the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities.

Today, BPU remains a not-for-profit, community-owned public utility serving more than 67,000 electric customers and 53,000 water customers throughout Wyandotte County and parts of Johnson County. Governed by a locally elected Board of Directors, we make every decision with the people we serve in mind. From delivering safe drinking water to keeping the lights on during life’s biggest moments, our purpose has never changed. We exist to provide safe, reliable, and affordable electric and water services while strengthening the community we proudly call home.

That commitment has earned BPU national recognition for reliability, operational excellence, and water quality. More importantly, it has earned the trust of generations of customers who count on us every day.

Because at BPU, we’re more than your utility. We’re part of your community.
